no internet in win xp home

Hi
i am trying to fix a friends computer, when i log on to the internet i get
no internet activity at all i have tryed to ping sites and have installed
opera and nothing. I have put it on a network that shares a internet
connection and set the pc up to connect over a lan and still nothing. i have
run adaware and spybot
any help would be great

Is this machine on the same IP range as the rest of the network? I
there a DHCP server? and is DHCP enabled?

I have tried having the ip address auto assigned and have specified ip and
subnet mask and with the DHCP server I have tried having that on and off and
I still get nothing
another friend of mine rang me last night and they are having the same
problem
