I'm having a problem accessing file shares on my own PC. I am connected to a
router with shared Internet access, but when I Browse my own PC via "My
Network Places", I can see the shares, but it will NOT allow me to access the
folders. "You might not have permission to use this network resource." I'm
logged-in as an Admin, using FAT32 part., disabled Norton Internet Sec. & NAV.

The weird thing is that I CAN access/browse my Printers, but NO folders!!!

Below is my IP config:

Glen,

You're running Teredo Tunneling, aka IPV6. Do you need access to IPV6
addresses?

Please start by un installing IPV6, aka Advanced Networking or Microsoft IPV6,
from the list of items under Local Area Connection Properties. You only need
the following items in the list:
Client for Microsoft Networks
File and Printer Sharing For Microsoft Networks
QoS Packet Scheduler (optional)
Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)

If you need IPV6, you can install it later. After you get file sharing working.

After un installing IPV6 (and rebooting), repeat diagnoses, and post with
updates.

Cheers,
Chuck

Enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP:

1. Open the Network Connections folder.
2. Right click the local area network connection and click Properties.
3. Double click Internet Protocol (TCP/IP).
4. Click Advanced.
5. Click WINS.
6. Click the Enable NetBIOS Over TCP/IP button.

Chuck: I tried uninstalling IPv6 to NO avail. I also tried enabling NetBios
Over TCPIP, but the strange thing is that when I enable it, then check
ipconfig /all, it still says "Disabled" even after a reboot!
I also assigned a static IP.

Any other suggestions???

Glen,

What are you trying to do here? Typically, if you were working on a file
sharing issue, you'd have another computer to compare against. Is there another
computer attached to the router that you can work from too?

Trying to use your computer to figure out it's own problems can be done, though
it may take a bit of work.

Check the list of items under Local Area Connection Properties. You need the
following items in the list, for file sharing to work:
Client for Microsoft Networks
File and Printer Sharing For Microsoft Networks
QoS Packet Scheduler (optional)
Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)

Make sure the browser service is running. Control Panel - Administrative Tools
- Services. Verify that the Computer Browser, and the TCP/IP NetBIOS Helper,
services both show with Status = Started.

On any XP Pro computer, check to see if Simple File Sharing (Control Panel -
Folder Options - View - Advanced settings) is enabled or disabled. With XP Pro,
you need to have SFS properly set.

On XP Pro with SFS disabled, check the Local Security Policies (Control Panel -
Administrative Tools). Under Local Policies - Security Options, look at
"Network access: Sharing and security model", and ensure it's set to "Classic -
local users authenticate as themselves".

On XP Pro with SFS disabled, if you set the above Local Security Policy to
"Guest only", enable the Guest account, using Start - Run - "cmd" - type "net
user guest /active:yes" in the command window. If "Classic", setup and use a
common non-Guest account on all computers. Whichever account is used, give it
an identical, non-blank password on all computers.

On XP Home, and on XP Pro with Simple File Sharing enabled, make sure that the
Guest account is enabled. Enable Guest with Start - Run - "cmd" - type "net
user guest /active:yes" in the command window.

On XP Pro, if you're going to use Guest authentication, check your Local
Security Policy (Control Panel - Administrative Tools) - User Rights Assignment,
on the XP Pro computer, and look at "Deny access to this computer from the
network". Make sure Guest is not in the list.

Cheers,
Chuck
