And what happens when you examine the hard disk area of your platform's BIOS ?

Does it show a hard disk and the type ?
What is the motherboard, interface card or platform that the hard disk is connected to ?

If one minute your were happily computing along (didn't do any dangerous things) and you shut down your system and you next tried to startup your system and you got this errror I suspect you have a bum harddrive.

Does the harddrive show up in the BIOS? Just checking the BIOS is not enough. You need to reset CMOS (manufacturer specific) then check whether your harddrive shows up in the BIOS. You also want to be checking the POST.

It happened to my sys; Chkdsk reported unrepairable errors, IBM disk utility
reported shock damaged drive. Installed new hd/system, was then able to
format old hd, which then reported no errors and is working quite happily

Well this definitely did not happen just by turning off your machine and rebooting. There must have been something in between you left out. If not prepare yourself it will happen again.

The sys 'froze' whilst playing Railroad Tycoon3 after hard boot probs began.
am not a hardened gamer, only have a couple of stress relievers!
After sys restored am thinking of dual boot, on seperate hd, to run the odd
game in 'safety'
