No drives after boot

After windows xp loads I have no access to my cd (e:) of my dvd (d:) drive. They don't show on the my computer screen until I go to my device manager and hit the scan for new hardware devices, after that they pop-up and work perfectly. How can I fix thi

Download and install a tiny patch from the following URL to delete
upper and lower filters from the Windows registry:
http://www.dougknox.com/xp/scripts/xp_cd_dvd_fix.vbs
