no disconnect button after internet

Whenever I finish on the internet and hit the X button I go down to the
icons but no box comes up to allow active disconnect action.. I have to
wait until 20 minute timeout or shut computer completely off to do the modem
disconnect.

If you have the modem connection status icon in the
bottom right corner of the screen, you can right click on
it and select Disconnect.

Quick way of checking is to go to the internet options,
check the dial up settings and select Advanced. There
should be the option to disconnect when connection may no
longer be needed. If this is selected, you may have
something on the machine which is trying to stay on
line......
