Internet Connection Timing out

J

Jahnsart

Hi all, I use a cox cable modem for my internet connection. It keeps
on timing out and shutting down on me. It disconnects and goes
inactive, i have to turn the machine off and on again to get it
connected. Are there any settings that would have it disconnect after
no use?

Someone help, cause cox can't help me until Monday,

Thanks,
Jahn

Go to Start > Run and type: devmgmt.msc , and hit enter
to open the Device Manager. Scroll down to Network adapters
and expand by clicking the '+'. Right-click on your network
adapter and select Properties, and under Power Management
uncheck: "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save
power", then click OK.

I have pretty much the same problem, and browsing the posts on this site, it
seems to be a pretty common complaint. I've done all the stuff
suggested...looked for timeout/power save options (all are disabled), e-mail
account properties, nothing is set to "hang up". My connection is via a LAN
(cable modem, which the company has already installed a signal booster on,
and keeps maintaining that the connection to the modem is stable and it must
be a software problem on my end). I routinely run anti virus
spy-ware/mal-ware programs (Spybot, AVG, SE-Ad aware), have an anti-virus
program and a firewall (MacAfee--even when I briefly disconnected the
firewall, my connection dropped, so I don't think it's any of those
settings). I don't use a router, the disconnects don't happen when I'm using
any particular program, at any particular time of day, and the only thing
that works is to restart the entire system--annoying! Repairing the internet
connection fails, because it fails to renew the IP address. Is there anything
else I need to try??? Is this an XP issue, and is Microsoft doing anything to
fix/patch it??
