No dialtone - software issue

I cannot get a dialtone on my modem, and unfortunatley my
last system restore point is about 4 days before my
earliest available one. Having run my modem's inbuilt
checking software I have established that the modem can
recieve a dialtone, but that my software cannot access it.
I've tried pretty much every option available within the
modem configuration and have also tried creating a new
connection but nothing has helped at all.

Can anyone help? Thanks for any advice you can give me.
