Hi guys, can anyone help with this problem.
I've just installed a PCI V90 56k modem, installed drivers
and everyting seemed fine, but whenever I try to connect
Keep getting the message _ Opening Port..
Error 680: there was no dial tone.
I've check the region setting (UK in my case) but I cant
get the little shit to work ??
Any help appreciated.

Using the cable that came with it? If not, try a different
cable. There are definately more than one configuration of
modem cable, and using the wrong one gives a result like that.

Do a simple test:

[1]unplug cable that runs from modem to telephone socket and then pick
up phone receiver to check for dial tone.

[2]plug cable from modem back into telephone socket, wait a few seconds
and then check for dial tone using phone receiver.

If you lose the dialtone after [2] then something, computer specific is
causing the loss of a dialtone. 3 possibilities. 1,Its the cable as
already mentioned. 2,the modem is dodgy, or 3,its not using the correct
modem drivers.

As an afterthought, if you have several phones also plugged in to
various phone points around your home, then try unplugging them. I do
recall some kind of issue with homes that were using more than 3 phone
points causing problems.

And 4, you have the phone line plugged into the wrong jack on the back of
your computer. This is most common problem, as there are usually two jacks
on the modem: one for line in, and one for line out to your telephone.

Some modems give that error message if you have a Voicemail message waiting
that causes your dialtone to beep (not a steady tone).
