No dial tone

I recently upgraded from w98se to win2000 and at the same time went BT
broadband. When reinstalling all the hardware drivers i discovered that my
old modem could not run under win200 as I had no compatible drivers and I
couldn't get any off the web.

I solved this by buying a newer w2000 compatible v92 modem (PCworld basic
modem) but now I cannot get it to work, it just spews out the error that
'There is no dial tone'. Well, I know there is a dial tone as I can connect
a phone directly to the extension and hear it myself.

Modem diagnostics doesn't show any issues nor are there any conflicts etc. I
have also removed the entry from Device manager and reinstalled the drivers
etc with no benefit.

Modem on Com 4

ATQOVIEO OK
AT+Gmm +GMM PCI softV92Modem
AT+F class=? 0.1.8.80
AT#cls=? Command not supported
ATI1 255
ATI2 OK
ATI3 Soft 56V_B2.1_V7.16.00
ATI4 PCI softV92Modem
ATI5 180
ATI6 SoftK56
Cmodem V12
RKsampleV342
ATI7 255

TIA

Your modem may not be able to detect a dial tone. This
is why there is a tick box under advanced setup to wait
or not to wait for a dial tone. The location of this tick box
is modem-specific - start hunting!

Do the usual due dilligance stuff like make sure the modem line is
plugged in to the correct jack, and plugged on ALL the way. (it should
click noticably)

There is a generic driver from conexant that you can use if you get no
luck. THe generic driver install is a bit scary. It always appears to
do nothing for too long, wait a minute or three, and it will work. You
install this one by extracting the archive to a folder, and click on
HXFsetup. Click yes on all the dialog boxes.

THe generic drivers work for most connexant chipsets.

There is also a handy utility that will identify conexant chipset based
modems more specificly.

More stuff here.

If nothing works, return your modem to the place of purchace and ask
for a refund.
