No devices in Device Manager

A brief history of my problem:

When I click on 'My Computer' a get a flashlight and it takes a long
time for items to display in the window and also in Internet Exporer I
could no longer just type www.cnn.com without having to add the
http://. I read that this most likely has to do with usb driver
issues. I went to device manager to remove my usb devices so I could
reinstall but my device manager shows no devices. I then read that
this could be caused by the Plug and Play service not running. My
Plug and Play service was running but I was unable to stop it as those
options were greyed out. I then read I could reinstall the device
manager but I now have completely broken it. I don't know how to
extract the file from the i386 directory as it is not there. Even if I
get this back, I still have no clue on what I can do to fix my original
problem. Help Please.

Go into Control Panel then Add Remove Programs
Click Show Updates and scroll down to "Security Update for Windows XP
(KB905749)†and remove it. Follow the instructions.

When you reboot, everything will return to normal. I had this problem with
four laptops so far. It sucks having to remove the update, but it's worth the
risk to get your pc working normally again...

All the best,
David
