No desktop on Win2k(sp4)

Hi folks, I have been experiencing the same problem that some folks here had,
which is that for no know reason the icons on my desktop as well as the task
bar won't show. The only thing I see is my wallpaper, and my mouse, which is
moving. I can access my task manager and work everything from there (like
right now) but thats it. I reviewed a couple of posts by folks with look
alike problem, but no fix worked so far. Here's what Ive done:
-Tested with spybot and AVG. No success.
-Downloaded w2ksp4 and run it. No success.
-Tried renaming the Shdocvw.dll file Shdocvw.old in the system32 file. No
success.
-I don't have APC or something software.
-No safe booth successful neither.
Any clue, anyone?
Thanks a lot
JF

Are you using StopZilla ?

| No, i have spybot, avg and prevx.

OK -- That wasn't my point ;-)

StopZilla had a buggy update recently that caused those symptoms. I have seen this on Win2K
and WinXP platforms and the maker of StopZilla admitted the problem. The objective would be
to uninstall StopZilla then download a new version and install gthe new version.

That was my intent of the query.

Try this:

Press CTRL+ALT+DELETE to get to Task manager.

On the file menu click new task.

go to: Hkey local machine\software\microsoft\windows NT\Current
Version\imagefileexecutionoptions\

Delete explore.exe and iexplorer.exe.

Restart and your desktop should come back with icons and taskbar.

I had this problem with my XP machine and after 2 months of searching thru
the internet I found this fix and it worked for me.

I think you messed up the instructions...

I think you meant....

~~~~~~~~~~
Press CTRL+ALT+DELETE to get to Task manager.
On the file menu click new task.
Execute; regedit
Go to:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Image File Execution Options
Delete; explore.exe and iexplorer.exe.
Restart and your desktop should come back with icons and taskbar.
~~~~~~~~~~

Assuming that will help the OP.

Actually, I don't have these 2 files in that folder

Hkey local machine\software\microsoft\windows NT\Current
| Version\imagefileexecutionoptions\

Don't know why.
Any other idea?

No other ideas at the moment, but FYI they are normally not there.

Uninstalled mIRC. Nothing changed.
Renamed shdocvw.dll shdocvw.old. Nada.
In that page they talk about more files that could cause problem if in the
system32 folder (browseui.dll, comctl32.dll, etc...) should I try rename
those dll to .old?
I'm runnin out of solutions...
Thanks again!
