No desktop icons or start menu taskbar

Computer boots up to the login screen, login and desktop comes up with
wallpaper, but no icons or start menu. Anyone got a fix??

If you right-click on the desktop, does anything pop up? If you do a
ctrl-alt-del, is EXPLORER running?

One example: Winkey+E opens Windows Explorer. From there the OP can navigate
to his/her antivirus software, or to an online scanner.

Thanks for all the tips! I'll try them and see if they work. I can't
remember whether explorer is running, but I know that may be part of the
issue! Thanks!
