No context menu.

I'm new to the group but not new to computer glitches. I can not access my
context menus in the Start Menu. Right click works fine on the desk top but
right click does not work on the menu itself. I need to see my Event Log and
other things that as far as I know can only be accessed by right click.
Also when I left click on My Computer it takes a full 45 seconds to load the
screen. What's going on?
Thanks in advance

I don't know how right clicking the start menu allows access to event logs. Turn on Enable Drag n Drop in Start Menu's Properties.

I assume you're accessing Event logs by right clicking on My Computer and
selecting manage. Try this. Start/Run, type in gpedit.msc to start the
Group Policy editor. In User Configuration go to Administrative Templates,
and Start Menu and Taskbar. Check to see if any policies are set removing
context menus. As a workaround, to open Event Viewer (or other admin tools)
click on Start/Run, type in cd\ and press enter. Then type in cd
windows\system32 and press enter. The type in dir *.msc to get a listing of
the administrative tools snapin names. Use these in a run line to start
them. Example: Start/Run eventvwr.msc.

Thanks MikeG. Your tip on accessing my Event Viewer worked. I thought there
had to be a way. I don't - or can't find - gpedit.msc however.
Now..why do you think it takes so long to load a windows program.

Hmm...if you're running XP Home that would account for it. I'm tied up a
bit, but when I get a second I'll see if I can locate the actual registry
entry. As far as the performance issue in starting programs, try
this...Start/Run and type in msconfig and press enter. Click on the services
tab, put a checkmark in the hide all microsoft services and click on disable
all. Then click on the startup tab and select disable all. Click on OK and
reboot. If the performance issue is corrected, start up msconfig again and
try the process of elimination to see what is causing the bottleneck.

Everyone else clicks it on the multiple places it can be set on Start. At the very least it will be
Start - Control Panel - Administrative Tools

It may be

Start - Administrative Tools.

But as you stuff about changing settings at random you probably disabled the above like you did with right click.

So we have a moron who is given correct advice but ignores it for some wierd workaround. You were told how to fix it idiot.

Easy buddy. These forums are for mutual help, not abuse.

Truck - Open regedit. go to
HKey_Local_Machine\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\policies\explorer
Look for a value in the right hand pane called NoChangeStartMenu. If it is
present, change the value from 1 to 0.

Don't click Event Viewer on start, don't check the user options. How are you helping?

Simple. If your user interface does not work properly or in a number of
other situations that DO arise, it can be useful to have a working knowledge
of both policies (applies to Pro more so than Home) and in particular the
registry. The root issue is not starting event viewer, but the right click
option. Your answer is quite correct, mine just digs a little deeper. No
doubt you feel that a better knowledge of how the interface affects the
system is a waste of time. You're welcome to your opinion.
