Hi,

I've happily been running Win XP Pro SP1 on my machine
(specs below), but though I'd try out the SP2 upgrade over
the weekend.

I tried twice. Both times the upgrade seems to go thru
fine. The PC reboots, all seems ok.

BUT, if I right click on ANY file (on the desktop or
through Explorer) the hourglass comes up - no menu.
Eventually (still hourglass) I am told that DrWatson
Postmortem has encountered a problem. If I click send or
don't send the hourglass still sits there, and only way to
stop is to kill the drwatson process.

I can fire up apps just fine (i.e left click)...it's just
the file context menu that seems to be messed up.

Any ideas?? I've reverted to SP1....and again all is good
in the world ;-)

If you have Dr Divx installed, uninstall it.

That context menu handler will cause the problem that you are experiencing.

Otherwise, if you don't have that installed, it is likely that you have some
other context menu handler that is causing explorer to crash.

Jason,

I do have Dr Divx installed. Will try uninstall before
running SP2 again.

Thanks,

Mark

Divx Networks says they will have a fix for Divx/Dr Divx such that it will
work with SP2 without issues... but the ETA on that is not known.

Jason,

just by the way, I have some indication that at least one of the
offending codecs is also contained in other filter packs, like
the Tsunami Filter Pack, causing the same symptoms even when
DivX is not installed directly.

The specific issue with the right clicking of files is tied directly to the
encodedivxext.dll file that Dr Divx installs.

The issues with the other codecs you mention, while indeed problematic with
other aspects of SP2, do not cause the context menu crash.

Jason,

ah, thanks! Good to know this more precisely.
