no change to website after update?

If I publish a site with lets say 1.2.3 on screen I can view it no problem.
When I update and upload with lets say 4,5,6 and then access the site I
still get 1.2.3 can anyone tell me where I am going wrong?
My ftp program tells me updates are successful.
HELP please
