No CD-ROM's In My Comp/Explorer

Hello to whoever reads this,

I have a Dell computer with a DVD-ROM and a CD-RW drive. Both of these
drives are seen in the BIOS and both appear in Device Manager. Device
Manager indicates that both drives are working properly. The drives are not
displayed in Windows Explorer and My Computer. Both drives are connected to
the secondary IDE and are jumpered for cable select, (I set them
master/slave and they still did not show up). I then assumed the ribbon
cable may be defective so I slaved one of the units off the hard drive on
the primary IDE and it still didn't show up. Need help, any ideas would be
appreciated.

Insufficient information.

Is this a sudden and recent event, ie, did the drives work OK before? If so,
did you update or add Windows patches before the drives misbehaved?

Did the drives come with the computer, or did you add them yourself?

Etc.

BTW, the Master must be at the end of the cable. I don't use Cable Select -
I've found it to be a very unreliable technology.
