under sounds and audio device properties it shows no
audio device installed. but when i go to the hardware tab
in that same window it says that soundmax integrated
digital audio is working properly. when i search for new
drivers it says it doesnt have a newer version and i dont
have a driver to roll back on. i also tried clicking on
the soundmax 3.0 icon in the control panel but it
says 'an exception occured while trying to
run 'shell32.dll, control_runDLL "C:\Program Files\Analog
Devices\SoundMAX\SMax3CP.cpl", SoundMAX 3.0" i also cant
find the system restore cd with the original software on
it.

-i have XP

do you have a PCI sound card installed? if yes than maybe they are
conflicting
have you tried uninstalling and reinstalling both the soundmax driver and
software?

In services, make sure that the WinAudio service is enabled,
automatic, and running. Then in Device Manager, System Devices make
sure Plug and Play Software Device Enumerator is installed ok.

If you need to reinstall the Plug and Play Software Device Enumerator,
copy machine.inf from %windir%\inf to a temp dir
remove line 20: ExcludeFromSelect=*

add new hardware have disk (select the temp dir
with the modified machine.inf) and install the
plug and play software enumerator

swenum.sys is found in system32\drivers
streamci.dll is found in system32
or they can be found on your windows disk

Once that is reinstalled, uninstall the sound card drive, do a scan
for hardware changes then after it finds and reinstalls that card, you
should have sound again.

I had the same problem where the sound card device was ok in the
device manager but I got No Audio in the sound control panel (and
physically). My problem was that the PnP Enumerator had disappeared
and reinstalling it using the method above fixed the sound.
