No Audio Device

I hear some system sounds like at startup or shut down, but windows media
player does not work and websites with sounds do not work. I'm sure it's
something I did, but in the control panel/sounds and audio devices, it says i
have no audio device. When I double click the soundmax icon in the control
panel i get a RUNDLL error. It says: An exception occurred while trying to
run
"C:\WINDOWS\system32\shell32.dll,Control_RunDLL"C:\WINDOWS\system32\SoundMax.cpl",SoundMax"

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

SoundMax is software that is used with motherboard integrated sound
chips. Is that what you are using rather than a sound card? If so, make
sure the on-board sound is turned on in the BIOS.

Try downloading audio drivers from your computer manufacturers web site and
re-installing them.
