No application sound

Dear all,
For whatever reason, I have recently been unable to play any sound
schemes on my windows xp system. I can play sounds through windows media
player, as well as any dvds or audio cds, so I know it is not the sound
card. I have tried to select a different sound scheme through the
control panel/sound and audio devices, but still no joy. This question
was posted a couple of weeks ago, and Byte answered, but I still have
the same problems. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance,
Ian.

Let's try some more
System Sounds are missing

Go to Start/Run/Regedit and navigate to this key: HKEY_USERS. If it doesn't have a Data entry in the right pane that reads: (value not set), double click (Default) and delete it. If it does, check your HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21 keys for the same.

Dear Byte,
I have checked my HK_USERS key, and it does have those values. I have
gone to the kellys-korner-xp.com web site, and printed out the
information on line six, but I do not understand what to look for. For
instance, under appevents\schemes\apps\default, the first line is
@=windows, but my line is missing the @ and =. As I am uncertain what to
look for, I do not want to alter anything.
If you could help, the that would be great.
Thanks,
Ian

You could edit it with the @ = and if that corrects it, fine
You can always go back and remove them.
I have checked all other knowledge base information and n
additional info to forward to you. If you have a warranty or tec
support for your PC, you may want to check that out. Hands o
is better than trying it under these remote conditions.

Ian and Byte,

It seems I am facing the same problem. For no reason, my
computer - suddenly - is unable do play any sound. Only
Windows Media Player works. MusicMatch Jukebox and all
other system sounds don't work. When I try to play under
MMJukebox, an error message appears: "WaveOut format not
supported"! Knowledge base has no help for this
sound "fail". Things I've tried unsuccessfully:

1 - changed my sound board;
2 - removed my fax/modem board;
3 - edited registry for problems (none found!);
4 - updated system (windowsupdate);
5 - cried!;
6 - got furious.

There are two strange behaviours I can see:

1 - Under voice (Control Panel->Audio and Sound Device
Properties): I can not fix the "Default device" listed.
Anytime I choose my device (Emu10Kx Audio [DC00]), apply
changes, close window ('Ok') and return to the option, it
is empty again. Once empty, I can not
use "Volume", "Advanced" and "Test hardware" buttons.

2 - Under Sound (Control Panel->Audio and Sound Device
Properties): any "Program Event" I click, the play button
remains unabled (gray). So, I can ever click the button.

At least two choices are up to me:

1 - Format HD and reinstall hundreds of applications
(this is cruel and boring);
2 - Buy another computer (that's a total nonsense!).

If any human being has the key to this problem, please
let us know.
