no acess to the internet

When I try to acess the internet I get the message
Internet explorer has encountered a problem and needs to
close
AppName:iexplore.exe AppVer.6.02800.1106
Mod Name:shell32.dll ModVer.6.02800.1233
Offset 00095f7c

I have recently enabled Windows xp firewall could this be
the problem? or is it something in my registry that is
causing the problem

Looks like a third party spyware may have been possibly installed on your
machine.
try some SPyware cleaning utilities such as Spyware detector and clean the
system - then try again.
You can also try to reinstall IE6 from Windows Update website.
