Suddnely IE 6 has begun failing to start with the meesage:-

"Internet Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close. We
are sorry for the inconvenience."

If I click on click here I get the followingdetails in error
signature:-

"AppName: iexplore.exe
AppVer: 6.0.2800.1106
ModName: shell32.dll
ModVer: 6.0.2800.1233
Offset: 00095f7c"

Can anyone suggest how I solve this as none of the search results on
the KB have been related to shell32.dll?

Open the Internet Options applet in Control Panel
Uncheck "Enable third-party browser extensions" on the Advanced tab.
You may also have to set the Home Page to about:blank

Then eliminate any scumware.
See
Dealing with Unwanted Malware, Parasites, Toolbars and Search Engines
http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/unwanted.htm

Note that AdAware and SpyBot S & D will each catch some things the other
won't. Also, each needs to be updated with the program's update function
before every use, even when just downloaded. There's also a lot more to do
than just those two programs. CWShredder is also available here:

**Post your HijackThis log to
http://forums.spywareinfo.com/ or the Spyware forum at
http://forum.aumha.org/ for expert analysis, not here.**
Alternative download pages for Ad-Aware, Spybot, HijackThis and CWShredder
may be found on this page:
http://aumha.org/a/parasite.htm.
If trying everything at that site does not fix the problem please post back
in the same thread.

Thanks for the prompt response. At the risk of appearing stupid I am
having trouble with the instruction at
http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/unwanted.htm

The setting were all as reccomended but when I Click on the "Content"
tab, Click the "Publishers" button I get two tabs:-

Trusted Root Certificate Authorities and Trusted Publishers - should I
remove unkowns form both windows in the latter I recognise all of the
in the first I recognise none execpt MS and there are a lot of them.

Also the instructions go on to say:-

Click on the "Advanced" tab

* Uncheck: "Install on demand (other)", click Apply\Ok

I may be being blind but I can find no such entry.

Thanks Frank - I was of course looking for "Install on demand (other)"
not "Enable Install on demand (other)" sorry to have been so thick.

I am however still uncertain on the certificates bit. If I select all
(or any one of) the certificates excepting the Microsoft ones in the
"Trusted Root Certificate Authorities" section I get the message:-

"Deleting System Root certificates might prevent some Windows
Components form working properly........." etc.

How can I tell if any of the non microsoft certificates are essential
to the operation of IE6 or will they all prompt to reinstall again?
Sorry to keep on but I want to be sure I don't mess up. For instance
thete are some Thwarte certificates there - I have heard of thwarte
but I have no idea what they are doing there.

Another dilemma is that as a website developer I run Opera and
Netscape - are any of these certificates related to them or are these
certificates only in relation to IE6 wnd Windows?

Sorry to fire so much back at you but this had made me realise that I
understand hardly anything about how this area of the inernet works
(bet I'm not alone either :-{)

Charlie

I don't understand certificates well enough to try answering questions about
them.
