Internet explorer shuts down when I try to play a game

Hi, I'm having a problem. Whenever I try to open an applet to play a game at
Yahoo or Shockwave, I get a message 'internet explorer has encountered a
problem and has to close'
The error signature is
AppName: iexplore.exe AppVer: 6.0.2900.2180 ModName: jvm.dll
ModVer: 5.0.505 Offset 000e5064

I've just purchased a new computer, internet explorer came pre-installed.
Please help if you can. Thank you very much.

*Update: I installed the free java program, as I figured that my problem had
something to do with Java Virtual Machine, and now everything is working fine!
