After upgrading Windows XP Pro with SP2 I no longer can access ntbackup.exe.
That is Task Mananger shows the program to be running, but I have no user
interface (the screen is still blank). Can anyone help?

Check Event Viewer to see if there is an error recorded in regards to
NTBackup.

Backup (NTBackup.exe) stops during the backup process and event 8017 is logged

When starting ntbackup.exe there seems to be 4 events logged on the System
event (nothing on Program or Security) repeating themselvs every few seconds
:)

Information Service Control Manager Event ID 7035 Removable Storage
event has sent a start control
Information Removable Storage Event 98 RSM was stopped
Information Service Control Manager Event ID 7036 The event Removable
Storage was stopped
Error DCOM Event ID 10010 The Server
{D61A27C6-8F53-11D0-BFA0-00A024151983} was not registered with DCOM within
the time limit for cancelation

Whatever this means?

The first two are normal and informational blurbs about the RSM service
being started and stopped. The last error Event ID 10010 is a little more
complex. Am finding a wide variety of suggested fixes but no definitive
answers.

Suggestion try Control Panel> Add/Remove Programs> Add/Remove Windows
components and make sure "Update Root Certificates" is installed.

Open Control Panel> Administrative Tools> Component Services. Click on the
DCOM Config branch. You may get notices that some exec files are not
completely registered. Make sure you recognize each application as a valid
program and say yes to record data regarding it. If you do not recognize a
program, say NO.

Test NTBackup and see how it goes. If still no luck, take a look at the
following:

If you have not changed default settings on any services, you may want to
contact Microsoft and consult with a tech to decide if the hotfix mentioned
in http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=825118 (the article is in the above
list) would help or not.

Greetings!

I too have had the same problem develop after installing SP2; although it
actually developed after I installed the cumulative patch of SP2 fixes. I am
experiencing the same issue that gunnar has, plus one more. If I try to start
the Removable Storage Snapin from mmc, it will fail to start; eventually
timing out. In the mean time it's generating the same DCOM 10010 error
pointing to the same reg location as does the failure of ntbackup to load.

I've done lots of digging and have found lots of "fixes" none of which work;
I suspect this is another feature? One thing that Sharon F suggested solved a
secondary problem. The RSM service would not start until I repaired the
removable storage manager database. That got the RSM going; otherwise the RSM
snapin fails to start as does ntbackup.

What next? How do we report this to get a bug report going?

TIA

Seems the problem isn't always at the removable media device but one step
back up the chain: A few folks have removed the *controllers* for the
removable devices from Device Manager. Restarted the system to let them be
redetected. Then attached the removable devices to let them be redetected
as well. No promises as this has only worked in some cases - not all.

Greetings

Thanks for the note. I have finally had success with both the issues; in
retrospect I believe they are interrelated. I uninstalled both the tape drive
and the SCSI controller, rebotted and let XP discover them; then tried to
start the removable services snapin - it failed! So, I used the rebuild the
corrupt database procedure to get the service running. Next, I went to

HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\NtmsSvc\Config

and lo and behold the Tape0 symbolic was missing, so I added it, and then
everything worked. The snapin and ntbackup.

However, after I exited backup and went to try again later, same problems -
nothing launched. The above reg key was missing! I also think that one of the
files which get replaced in the IE6 SP2 has something to do with the RMS. At
least, that's what I thought last night.

So, I had a victory and a failure. Any more suggestion?

Nope. I'm out of suggestions but I think this is something that should be
remitted to MS tech support. Tape backup is in the legacy category but the
method is too widely used to be knocked around by a service pack at this
point in time. I think that this needs to be looked at closer by MS.

Thanks for your replies. I agree that tape is becoming a legacy item with the
advent of kangaroo drives and 1 touch mass storage, but hey - it's effective.
Especially since it worked until IE6 SP2 ! So, how would you suggest this be
sent to MS tech? Email? Web? Telco? Which is most efficient.

Again, many thanks for the help!

Just an update - I followed the link you provided. I'm currently working
with MS support and have tried several things, including reloading the
ntbackup applet; still no luck. If and when the issue gets resolved, I'll
pass it along to the group.

Thanks for the update. You're in good hands. I've worked with customer
support on a few issues and have found them to be very thorough and
resourceful. If you have PSS stumped, we may see a new hotfix down the road
due to your incident. Good luck working through this.

Greetings

Well, after working with MS support for the past 40 days, I ended up going
back to SP1. The backup utility now works; of course, there are a few other
little bugs which have crept up because I did not do a "clean" install but
did a repair. The biggest bug is now the error "The DCOM Server Process
Launcher service hung on starting." appears and the process stays in the
"starting" mode. Plus, it takes about 5 minutes from the time I log on until
the GUI appears.

Time to hunt that bug down...

In the meantime, I have heard of no other resolutions other than removing SP2.

Thanks to all those, esp Sharon F. who replied to the original post(s).

Thanks for the update. Sorry to hear that this was not resolved without
reverting to SP1.
