NIC problems

I have recently upgraded from win2K to winXP pro. After the upgrade the
built in NIC did not appear. I installed the drivers from the manufacturer's
disk and everything seemed ok until I rebooted. The NIC was gone again. I
have tried several things and am running out of ideas. One thing that is odd
is that sometimes I can remove and rediscover the nic from the device manager
and it will start to work and sometimes it will not. When the NIC is not
working, the network connections window will not open and the windows
firewall window will not open. On the rare occasion that I can get it to
work, if I log off and log back on everything seems ok, but if I restart the
computer the NIC is gone again. And when the NIC does reinstall, it takes a
loooooong time.

Any help or suggestions will be greatly appreciated!

Do you see the NIC in device manager when it is "gone" in network connections
or "not working" ? Anything interesting in the eventlog?

When the NIC is not showing up in the Network Connections window the nic is
sometimes showing in device manager as normal, sometimes it shows with a
conflict, and sometimes not at all. Nothing of note in the eventlog. I am
considering a format and fresh install rather than the update. the ten
previous went fine, all same hardware same upgrade for 2k to xp, this one is
making me crazy.

If it is a conflict what is the message and status code: 12, 10, 31?

Well this may be a good idea.

I have a similar problem, My NIC always works and shows in the device manager
as working, yet never shows up in the network connections window. Usually
not a big deal but when trying to join a home network and do print sharing
its a necessity and thus my dilema.... I've tried removing it via device
manager and rebooting to let it find it again, tried reinstalling drivers and
still nothing.

Any help would be great =)
