NIC

Having somehow lost my onboard NIC (after trying out Ubuntu from a
CD), I installed a 3Com PCI card but cannot get it to connect to the
internet.
If I leave the tcp/ip protocols set to automatic, it comes up with
some weird IP Address, 169.254.75.23; 255.255.0.0; and I get a
'limited or no connectivity' messsage.
If I set them manually; 192.168.0.13; 255.255.255.0; 192.168.0.1, I
get a 'Local Area Connection 3 is now connected, Speed 100 Mbps'
message.
However, it will still not connect to the internet and I get a 'Server
not found' message.
My laptop connects wirelessly to the same router and also connects
happily if I hard wire it.
Any thoughts or solutions (especially solutions) please.

Did you disable the onboard NIC in BIOS? Even though it's bad, it still
needs to be taken out of the loop. Also, uninstall any software that may
have been installed with it. (Had to do that with my Asus board)
While the PC is down (before or after you disable the onboard one), remove
your PCI card and boot up. If the instructions for the new card say to
install the drivers first, do so now. Shut down, reinsert the PCI card, then
boot back up. If the drivers didn't need to be installed before, do that
now.
After that has finished, go to Start, Run, type in CMD, and press enter.
Type in ipconfig /release and see what it says. Then type in ipconfig
/renew. Then see if you can connect. You shouldn't to manually enter any IP
or gateway settings; it should pick that up from the router.
Are you sure the UTP cable is good?

I tried all those steps

settings that I'd had earlier. However, these were accompanied by a

unableto contact your DCHP server. Request timed out".
5. I have tried a different cable with the same results and
successfully connected my laptop with the existing cable so it appears
to be good.

169.254.xxx.yyy is indicating that the NIC is not receiving a TCP/IP
address from a DHCP service. What is this NIC connecting to and what
is your Internet service?

Problem Solved!!!
I shut down the PC and turned it off at the socket.
This morning when I booted it, my onboard card was there and, once I
had disabled the PCI network card, it went straight online.
