System File Error During NIC Installation

D

Don

Did an upgrade from Win2000 SP3 to XP SP2. Only problem has been the
network card. The hardware installation wizard reports:

"An error occurred during installation of the device. The system cannot
find the file specified."

I have tried this with 3com905 and Realtek NICs with the same result. When
I try to delete the NIC from the device manager, it tells me it cannot
because it might be used for booting.

If I knew what file it cannot find, that would help -- maybe. Does XP log
this somewhere?

Any suggestions into how to beat this thing into submission?!

Any help will be appreciated!

Thanks!

Yes it does. Search for setupapi.log in the KB for reference.
However you probably don't want to spend efforts to this.

Try boot in safe mode and then remove the netcard.
If this can be done, reboot in normal mode and install XP driver for it

Pavel,

Thanks for the setupapi.log hint! I found it. Based on looking at it and
another problem, I am thinking the PnP system might be corrupt in some way.
I am starting another thread on the topic.

Thanks again!
