Wow - some interesting stuff here :)

Gravity comes highly recommended by this group, yet slrn (Linux users
mostly, only ?) figures highly ?

And the subject of most debate recently, dialogue - 5 users - 1/50th
of the OE users :)

Interesting - thanks

Most of those posts would be mine. I tend to post more when the
vandals are attacking the group.
And the subject of most debate recently, dialogue - 5 users - 1/50th
of the OE users :)

There'd be more, but their copies are timing out.

Because it's the newsreader used by some of the regulars, e.g. Blinky
the shark.

An even more interesting statistic would be similar to this:
<http://web.ukonline.co.uk/davidgb/acf_stat4.html>

Of course that depends if dszady has the time and will to do it :)

If I could find out how to do it w/o doing it manually would be fine.
By the looks of the variety of stats it would be probably easier to go
to jail for the rest of one's life than to compile all that! :)

Interesting that a free, lightly publicized program like Xnews came close
to Outhouse Express, which ships with every Windows computer and which
probably 90% of users blindly use because it's there.

Not surprising at all really. I would suggest that a majority of internet
users worldwide (OE users by definition) do not use usenet at all. Those
that do use usenet are sufficiently well informed to know about
alternative clients and are therefore more likely to use alternatives
than those who do not use usenet.

When I worked for an ISP the % of customers who used newsgroups was tiny. I
think it would be fair to say that most didn't know they existed or weren't
interested in what they had to offer. Those that did tended to be more
experienced internet users who probably found OE limiting for what they
wanted and as such would move to something like Xnews or Agent etc.

This is interesting data. What software are you using to gather it?

XanaNews newsreader.

I D/L all available posts (28400±) for this group from adelphia last
night after I had posted those "stats". (From June 22, 2003) I noticed
a few discrepancies. Particularly the fact that the last newsreader I
used was OE. So the software isn't perfect.
The purpose was to see how many of the long threads were for actual
freeware. I didn't do an analysis but at a glance the results were
abysmal.
Even worse: the majority - over 50% - of the posts without a reply were
requests for actual freeware, if you discount the one-time posts for
announcing new stuff and trolling.

Even worse than that: It meant we weren't doing for the "onetimers"
(people probably without a clue as to where to turn except to come
here) the help they had asked for.

No political commentary here. Just a couple of obs.
