When you post stats for the most used Newsreader you should include the
stats for "User Agents by poster" rather than the stats for "User Agents
by number of posts", like you did in this post.

I only can generate what my newsreader gives me unless I write a script
for it.
Tell me what you mean by "User Agents by poster" and I'll see what I
can do. I think I understand but am not quite sure.

Well, on 1/11 you for the first time posted stats like these.
In response, on that same day, both »Q« and SINNER also posted stats,
but they used scripts/programs different from yours.

»Q« posted stats for the first ten months of this years :
http://groups.google.com/groups?&[email protected]
yndns.org (watch line wrap)

SINNER posted stats for 7 days : 24/10 - 31/10
http://groups.google.com/groups?&[email protected]_of_hell.
INVALID (watch line wrap)

Both »Q« and SINNER included two stats instead of your one stat for what
you called "The most used Newsreaders":

»Q« : Newsreader "(grouped, per msg.)" and "(grouped, per user)"
SINNER : User Agents "by number of posts" and "by poster"

Your "The most used Newsreaders" corresponds with »Q«'s "(grouped, per
msg.)" and with SINNER's "by number of posts"

However, I guess that most people will be far more interested in the
other stat instead and would find that other stat much more useful to
determine the "The most used Newsreaders"

The stats that »Q« posted are of course by far the most significant, as
they are gathered over 10 months.
They show best that there is a big difference between the two stats.
The main figures from that post:

<snip>
I originally started putting these figures up last month because of all
the flaming that was going on at the time. I was hoping people would
see that and subconsciously would calm down and it did calm down due to
other factors. Can't claim that victory.

The dude who wrote MesNews, Arnaud <[email protected]>, built the
stats calculator in it.
The stats aren't always precise because I see small errors in them. But
not to bad. I don't get all the posts from Adelphia either. :( (You
know, seeing a reply and not the OP for example) And Adelphia only has
the last 38,000 posts on it. So I couldn't do the whole year. Google
would have them. But a quick check here in 20031104-1.news in my
MesNews directory shows full headers so it wouldn't be impossible to
come up with something different. Getting around to it is another
thing.
As far as newsreaders compiling stats, there are others better at it
than MesNews.
I like the statistics you posted. (total messages, total posters, etc.)

A little aside: I love numbers.
As I read them I had to pull out my little calculator and discovered
Microsoft users wrote 9.65 post apiece between 1/1/2003 and 10/31/2003.
Xnews users wrote 31.76 posts for the same time period. Ah, but stats
lie. I changed newsreaders during the year and probably a few other
people did also. And obviously some people post way more than others.
We could make the argument that Microsoft makes the better newsreader
because more people use it. Or Xnews is the better newsreader because
of more posts per person for example. I'll stop that one there because
the logic sucks! Anyway.
Now I post these numbers just for amusement. I hope someone else enjoys
them also. :)

Recall we had Blinky in the equation at the time, who did 900 posts/week.

Current trend might show Agent suddenly enjoys all kinds of popularity. ;)

I see that is your Newsreader. Coincidence perhaps?

Blinky hasn't used Xnews this year AFAIK.

Maybe so. ;)

Those look like GoldFind stats. I hope Heiko will update the groupings
pretty soon. Different versions of Dialog are not grouped, nor are
Mesnews and some others. Also, if Hamster is allowed to tack on its
string to the user-agent field, those posts don't get grouped properly.

Thanks a lot! :)
