newsid on XPE image

Hello,

I have a XPE image with the components "Standard OpenHCD USB Host
Controller" and "Standard Enhanced PCI to USB Host Controller" included, and
it runs on our hardware with an ISP1561 USB controller from Philips.

Everything works fine, but if I run newsid downloaded from Sysinternals to
change SID after copying our discs, XPE is stuck at startup.
If I add /SOS in boot.ini I can see that it gets stuck during loading of
CLASSPNP.SYS.
It doesn't even help to boot the system with an original copy of the disc,
before using newsid. It also get stuck at the same place.

One way to get the disc working is to create a new image and let FBA run
again.
When I try the same thing. Another way is to boot on exactly the same
hardware without the USB controller mounted. Then I remove the service
entries for the controller in the registry and boot again on the original
hardware. After starting up I remove the USB controller in device manager and
restart. At next startup XPE finds the USB controller again and everything
works fine.

When I try the same procedure on a full XP Pro, nothing happens. After
newsid the system reboots and starts up as normal. No problem at all with the
USB controller.

What could be the problem in my XPE image?

Thanks

Göran,

What happen if you:
1. Copy XPe disk.
2. Let XPe boot and reboot.
3. change sid.
4. reboot.

IMHO I do not think that information about classpnp.sys being last file loaded has anything to do with system being stuck.
If you suspect USB controler, please disable it in BIOS, that way you will rule out this for certain as a problem

Hi Slobodan,

After I have copied the XPe disk, I boot XPe and everything works fine.
I reboot once again, it still works. After I change SID, XPe is stuck on the
next reboot.

Since we have designed in the USB controller on our own "motherboard", the
BIOS is unaware of the controller. The only USB controller the BIOS knows
about is the internal controller in Intels chipset, included on the ETX
module.

But since we have a variant of the "motherboard" where the USB controller is
not mounted and the problem doesn't appear on that hardware, I think I can
say that the USB controller is the problem.

Thanks

Me neither.

Once I had an image that was BSOD (7B). At KD all I saw was the last loaded driver - classpnp.sys.
I figured out later that it was a hardware RAID support driver I was accidentially missing (didn't componentize it in first place)
in my configuration.
