I have tried outllok Express and M.S. reading about newsgroups. O.E. did not
work re: getting replies as if the interface was not right.
I read to use NNTP and type msnews.ms.com and that's it. Sounds too ez so
question is how do I start?
Thank you

But that's pretty much how easy it is.

In OE, go into Tools, Accounts, click on Add, News, then fill out the forms.
You do NOT need to use your real email address, in fact doing so can gain
you lots of spam email. Accept all the other defaults with the news
server name you have above.

You should be downloading the groups in a minute or two.

Two questions;
1-where the prompt was to enter the email address my isp gave me I entered
one I made up -ok?
2-Under the servers tab, unless I leave bot unchecked A- this server
requires me to log on unchecked and also B-Logon using secure password
authentication, I cannot send a message. The sign in block keeps appearing.
I set up with a password but did not check to remember.
Does this sound right?

1- That's fine - unless your made-up email address is someone else's
/real/ email address.

"How to mung your email address for newsgroups"
http://www.2kevin.net/munging.html

2- If your usenet provider requires you to sign in with a password you
must place a checkmark in "This server requires me to log on" and then
enter your account name and password.

G

Grampy Pete

If I check either or both of the boxes in the servers tab, the sign in box
keeps appearing; if I uncheck both I can get replies and send to you. What
is a usenet? I ask b/c no one told me what to do.

Usenet is that part of the internet devoted to newsgroups. Think of
'usenet' and 'newsgroups' as synonyms, so 'usenet access' means the same
thing as 'access to newsgroups.'

Your usenet provider/newsgroup provider is the organization that
provides you with access to newsgroups and charges you for this access.
For most people, their usenet provider is their ISP, although there are
plenty of other organizations that offer access to newsgroups, usually
for a charge.

The Microsoft newsgroups are offered by Microsoft without charge. You
can access the Microsoft newsgroups through your usenet provider, or you
can access them directly from your newsreader.

If you access the Microsoft newsgroups directly from your newsreader,
there is no password. If you access the Microsoft newsgroups though your
ISP, ask your ISP if they require a password in order to use their
newsgroup service.

No problem, because you generally don't want to give out your email address
in newsgroups.

The MS servers do not require you to log in, and so do not require and won't
accept either a username or password.

Yes. the msnews server is not related to your ISP in any way, is public
and does not require or accept either a username or password. Leave those
boxes blank!

On the Server tab, enter *only* the server name, leave the rest blank.

What is a usenet?

Usenet is the collective name of the network of newsgroups - it's what you
are using to read and post here. It uses nntp, network news transfer
protocol. It's a technically different thing from the World Wide Web
(www).

Here's a trick. Open a Google page and enter this:

define: Usenet

or

define: nntp

And you'll get definition-style answers.

I now understand about the server and the boxes not to check.
Thank you very much.
One more question if I may, is there a way to receive replies in my Hotmail
account besides Outlook Express?

Not sure what you mean, but unless you've got either a very old Hotmail
account or a Premium account that you pay for, you cannot connect to Hotmail
with Outlook Express or any other POP client, only in a browser. MS
discontinued this a couple of years ago.

Perhaps you could rephrase your question?

Certainly. I 'd like to find a way to be notified that I have a reply other
than going to O.E. and scrolling for my name. If that is what folks do it's
ok with me; under the general tab I entered my hotmail ac't for 'mail' and
'reply to this address then checked the box beneath thinking this would
allow replies to show up in my Hotmail account.
Could you please tell me what I should have in the general tab and how to be
notified if possible.
Thank you for your help.

Hello
In newsgroup, under the general tab, 'email address', I entered - my hotmail
address and in 'reply address' I entered the same hotmail address; I checked
the box which says 'include this account when checking new messages.' My
intention was to see the reply in Hotmail. Please advise re: these entries
so I may amend them as necessary.
Thank you again

If you as a question in a newsgroup it's customary to expect an answer
in the newsgroup. It's done this was so that in the event there is
another user with the same question or problem, they can see the
responses from your question. By using your real email address, you are
just opening yourself up for a whole lot of spam.

The last two replies did not appear in my O.E. re the question about the
entries for the 'general tab'. What do I enter under that tab and why would
the replies suddenly stop in O.E.? Thank you

Hotmail is email. Newsgroups (usenet) are an entirely separate system
from email. Messages posted to newsgroups appear only in newsgroups.
The reason for providing an email address in a newsgroup is so people
can use it to send you private emails outside of newsgroup -- it has
no real function in the newsgroup itself.

Also, as someone pointed out, using your real hotmail address in
newsgroups will invite large amounts of SPAM email. To reduce this
SPAM, change your address to something like
(e-mail address removed). People who wwant to email you will see
this and correct the address. SPAMmers who harvest email addresses
from newsgroups aren't likely to take the time to manually correct the
address.

Instead of scrolling for your name, use the keyboard combination Ctrl +
H. This will filter out most posts, leaving behind only the ones you are
currently participating in. If the listing is in bold, that means there
are new messages in that thread (that is, replies to your posts).

You are probably used to the Web site you normally use that plugs into
these newsgroups. I imagine they have a feature that you are sent an
e-mail (in your case, to your Hotmail account) if anyone sent any new
replies. So, answering your question, no, you will not receive e-mails
if you use Usenet the intended way (through a news reader). However,
just follow the advice in my first paragraph, and you'll be fine.

And thank you for explaining email vs. newsgroups. I did not see some
replies in my O.E. but did a search in the newsgroup and found some
