I did a google desktop search of my computer and discovered that a lot of
the items that I had read in various newsgroups are retained on my computer.
I am running xp, latest version and use outlook express. I can not find
them on the computer. Where are they stored so that I can remove them?
Also, can I prevent them from being retained if I do not want them?

I think these are retained in the Gooogle Desktop app itself. There is a
large cache of information in your Documents and Settings folder under
"Application Data". Although the programme works well, some people are
concerned about privacy issues with this stored info. I am not sure how to
delete the cache. You may want to research this topic and/or explore
alternatives such as Copernic.

Use Outlook Express to remove them. Under Tools select Options and then
click on the Maintenance tab. Click the button titled Clean Up Now. The
select Delete and let it run thru your newsgroups. When it's done select
Compact and let it compact the remaining file.

The other option is if you don't want to access the newsgroup any longer,
you can remove (unsubscribe) the newsgroup from Outlook Express and it will
remove the corresponding files.
