How can I change my settings so that the last response to a posting is at
top after it's opened? When I open any of the postings here, I have to
scroll to the bottom to see the response. Any way to have these be at the
top of each note? Also, I'd like to get rid of the > at the start of each
line if I can. Thanks much for you help.

It would help to know what software you are using in order to read these
newsgroups. Each software have different options.

Do you read a book from the bottom up?

Thunderbird +the "Quote Collapse" extension. People around here like to
post at the bottom. Quote Collapse will at least shrink the previous
posts so you can see the reply.

If you're asking about having a reply within a post be moved to the top of
the message.. I don't know of any newsreader that does that.

The reply is placed by the person writing the message. Outlook Express
by default places the cursor at the top of the message; this is called
top-posting and is not really accepted practice, because to find what's
replied to you then have to jump between the ends of the message.

You can find software that will strip out the quote marks. It's normally
used for emails, but you have to save the file through it. It doesn't work
within a newsreader, and usually you don't want to do this as then you can't
tell who wrote what.

No I actually don't. But after I've read the threads and are just looking
for the next answer I thought it might be helpful (to me) to be able to read
it from the top. By the way, do you have any idea how rude your tone is?

Thank you. That's helpful.

How can you have tone in a typed message, tone is related to what you hear,
are you hearing things? :)

I understand now. I see that it works for me because I'm typing at the top
of the message. I didn't realize it was preferable to read it at the end
and will move it. Thank you for your help.

Do as you like in posting responses to OP here or anywhere else for that
matter. I cannot help you with your question and I have never seen a
applicatrion that can do as you wish. Don't pay any attention to those who
insist on bottom posting. If you post a response then you have already read
the question and need no further information. This is one of the very few NG's
who have weirdos who insist on bottom posts. As a person you do not have to
do anything to appease other readers, do as you desire.

Jesus...there's some dumb people in this newsgroup.

The clue was in the headers:

X-Newsreader: Microsoft Outlook Express 6.00.2900.2869

People that read usenet are not just the posters in a thread. Most
people read top to bottom, where like a book, as usenet is, you read the
oldest first.

What most people, once MS made it easy for them to get on the net, don't
understand is snipping the part they are not replying to.

And most of Usenet is bottom posters, it's only a small % of groups that
don't follow the standards.

So, as you can see, the next person that reads this post of mine will be
able to see the part you stated and my response to it, and they will
have everything in proper context.

This is not email, get use to doing it right on Usenet or get use to
being called to task for it.

You've all answered my question. It's me that controls where it goes. I
only needed someone to tell me that. I thought there was a setting. I plain
didn't know so I asked....thought that's what the group was for. I'm just
amazed that folks are so easily inflamed by a question. If you think
someone's stupid, think it. But does one really need to let everyone else
know how smart you are by stating it out loud?

You need to get your Usenet client fixed, it's not quoting text
properly, it's not clipping signatures, and it makes your reply, since
it doesn't quote properly, look like the content of the person you reply
too.

Try Anawave Super Gravity (search google for Super Gravity)

http://lightning.prohosting.com/~tbates/gravity/super.html#download

It's text based, is a real Usenet client, and doesn't suffer from the
problems that email clients do.

I was not suggesting anything about you, but you might want to try
something that was designed for Usenet instead of something that has
been broken since it learned about Usenet.

Umm no. Usenet ettiquette says that you should follow the custom of the
group to which you are posting. In THIS particular group there is no custom.
But in others (the Mozilla groups and other technical support for example)
there is a very strong tradition of bottom posting.

WTF are you prattling on about? Bottom posting is the PROPER way to do
it and has been since the inception of Usenet. It's got nothing to do
with the custom of what group you're in. A group with mostly top
posting only means that there's a high proportion of Shithouse Express
users who know no better.

Actually, the Thunderbird Extension I mentioned will collapse the
replies WITHIN the newsreader. And I agree, you can word things
differently and change the "tone" of a typed response.

Coming from a democracy as I assume you do Conor, you should also be aware
that when 51% of the people do it one way, even if its not your preferred
way, then that is unfortunately the correct way to do it.

Education provided by a "Shithouse Express" user to a plain ignorant
shithead.

Most car drivers exceed the speed limit but it doesn't make it legal.

Worthless then.
