Are the newsgroups being purged after some date? No messages on this
group can be accessed prior to 10/1/2003. (Using Outlook Express, XP
Pro.)

You need to download ALL the mesages from the newsgroup. you just have the
most recent.

Hi

If you mean 1st October, then, no the MS NGs aren't purged that early. Are you using an MS news server or your ISP's news server? Try right clicking on the appropriate news group, select Properties, Local File and then Reset.

Thanks, Chris. I downloaded "next 1000 headers" several times without
improvement. I can't find an "all" option for downloading. Can you
advise?

All of the msnews.microsoft.com groups (that I subscribe to) seem to
have the same behavior. Headers downloaded earlier but not read are
crossed out when selected.

Yup, Will, I did that and compacted the file before I posted.

Go To OE\tools\options\maintenance There You will See Delete News Groups___
Days CHANGE TO ZERO or Whatever You Perfer To Erase Them On

Hi

Try right clicking on the News Server and selecting 'Reset List'. If that doesn't work, try unsubscribing/re-subscribing to the appropriate news groups.

Righto. I'll be back later . . .

Excellent advice but that one's under "compact in the background," which
I have turned off long ago.

maybe this has something to do with it...

For several days, we have been experiencing slowdowns in the Microsoft
newsgroups. The combination of the recent waves of spam and viruses
generated several issues that Microsoft teams are troubleshooting now. In
the meantime, to help deal with the slowdowns, we are reducing our message
archive from 90 days to 30 days for newsreaders (such as Outlook Express).
To access discussions older than 30 days, you can use this page:
http://www.microsoft.com/communities/newsgroups/default.mspx

Microsoft Communities Team

Ha! Thank you very much.

Bob, what Chris said is the case. You have to download the posts 1000 at a
time. For this group, 1000 amounts to about one day's worth. Also, if you
unsubscribe and then resubscribe, all the deletions, highlightings,
unboldening (after it is read) etc. will be lost, and you will only have the
last 1000 posts!

Thanks, Bern. If you browse up about 4 messages you will see that that
is what I did. I f you browse down about 4 you will see Danny
Mingledorf's response, which clears it all up.

Sorry, Bob! I did not realize that 10/1/2003 was over 30 days ago. My error.

Will, I believe that at least temporarily, messages are only
being retained for 30 days on the Microsoft servers.

Hi Ken

Yes, 30 days as I understand it as well. The postings prior to 10/1 - US - 1/10 - UK should still be available.

Ouch. Well, maybe it is in the Great Republic of Microsoft. Anyway,
that's the limit on this outlet.

Of course! I completely misread 10/1 as being the first day of
*last* month--hence over 30 days. Sorry for the dumb comment.

On the tools | options | read page uncheck "get the next xxx headers". Also while you are there on maintenance untick "delete headers xx days after downloading". You will then get everything available.

There were server / feed problems for these groups on about that date,
which may explain what you see.
