news registry setting bad

Hi,

After upgrading to Office 2003 I notice if one goes into MSIE and selects
the Programs tab, they will notice the Newgroups setting is blank. It can
be set to Outlook Express, but it used to be able to be set to Microsoft
Outlook as well. I think that setting it to Microsoft Outlook would start
the "outnews" version of OE. If one tries to make the "outnews" client the
default program, the blank setting for newgroups always comes back. If I
copy:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Clients\News\Outlook Express
to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Clients\News\Microsoft Outlook

and adjust the name and command setting to use /outnews this seems to work
and I'm not bothered with warning messages about the default client but I'm
not sure I got it right. Anyone have any thoughts?

Thanks,
John

The news setting indeed goes blank. If the solution work for you you can
leave it that way. A more proper way of dealing with the problem can be

Hi,

The problem I saw (if I'm reading correctly) with the method described via
the hyperlink is that in order to work properly, you have to tell the
Outlook Newsreader not to make checks that it is the default newsreader. In
other words, the default newreader is set to Outlook Express and the Outlook
newsreader variant knows it is not the default but ignores it. I considered
that but rejected it because of the possibility that some other program down
the road might decide to become the default newreader... then I wouldn't
know. That has happened to me before. The solution I described allows me
to specifiy the Outlook Newsreader as the default program and I would know
if someone else changed that. Admittedly though, it's a bit more
complicated change than the hyperlink proposes. If there's any desire, I
would be happy to export my new registry settings and post them so they
could easily be imported.

Take care,
John

Hi John,

Thanks for the feedback. If you would send me the modified registry key I
can look into it would be great. If it is a one time only edit (meaning; you
edit the registry once and then whatever when the default client changes you
don't have to go back into the registry again to fix it) it could be a good
permanent solution. You can send the registry key (zipped or in txt-format)
to (e-mail address removed)
