1. OE Tools | Options | Read | Get XXX headers at a time

The default is 300. You may set this option as high as 1,000. Right-click
on the newsgroup in Folders pane | Synchronization Settings | select New
Messages Only. Now every time you open the newsgroup (or hit F5), you will
download the next-newest set of headers/messages..

When you feel you've downloaded enough headers/messages, again
right-click
on the newsgroup in Folders pane and select Catch Up Now. This will Mark as
Read all messages on the server, including ones you've not yet
downloaded.
Now return to "Get XXX headers at a time" and uncheck the option completely;
then compact the folder.

From now on, OE will only download headers/messages posted to the server
since you last checked (polled) for messages.

You should probably visit this page, too:

there).

2. Click on the following links to open the newsgroup in OE:

My new ISP doesn't 'do' newsgroups and so I'm having to deal with trying
to
follow topics on a LONG list of ...public.xp.general and so on topics.
Is
there a newsgroup reader that is suggested that could help with this
that
would be recommended. No charge would be appreciated.

Thanks much,

What WOULD be nice is if OE could automatically delete newsposts after xx
days on your computer, instead of our having to manually go in and run a
"news rule" to manually remove them from the computer after xx days" each
time. I haven't yet seen a solution for that. And if you don't do it, the
newsfolders keep growing and growing (with the old message headers still
being stored) (compacted or not compacted).
Thanks for your feedback, Curt.

Well, I really have no big issues with OE, so I don't see much point in
going to another newsreader yet like Free Agent. And having email and news
so conveniently together in OE just seems pretty convenient to me.

@BD: <bite me>

I sometimes have to ponder on the expressions you use, PA Bear but found
this:-

: What's the meaning of the current usage "bite me"? Thanks. - Patty

I believe the meaning is pretty clear. However, for the record, "bite
me" refers to fellatio. Oral sex. The phrase isn't an invitation to a
sexual encounter. It means "get lost" or "screw you." (Someone somewhere
has no doubt done a study on why we use sexual terms in this manner.
it's probably a dominance thing.)

Ref: http://www.phrases.org.uk/bulletin_board/8/messages/213.html

You said this (knowing it to be a lie)

"I did a competent and thorough investigation of BD's online history a
few
years ago and discovered that he'd been banned by several ISPs
(including
AOL), that several of his non-ISP email accounts had been discontinued,
and
that he'd been banned by several forums and newsservers for abuse. This
led
to BD being permanently banned from AumHa Forums and all of his multiple
user-accounts being Deleted"

What, exactly, are you fearful of me discovering?

None of my OE has ever worked like that. Although I wish it would sometimes.
How all of mine works is they match what is on the server and delete the
ones the server has already deleted. And some servers only keeps things for
a few days while some others can keep them for a year or more.

Regarding that last sentence, it's a point of view that many people
have, but one that I've never understood. Personally I see no value in
having both functions in a single program, and I'd appreciate hearing
from you as to why you feel that way. I use Forte Agent 5.0 as a
newsreader and Microsoft Outlook 2007 as an E-mail client.

But if you do want both functions in the same product, you might want
to look at and consider Forte Agent, which *does* do that.

Couldn't agree with you more, however:

Fact: All OE development ceased in June 2006. There will be no added
functionality or improvements, ever.

Fact: MS will continue to issue security-related updates for OE as long as
the OS in which it's running is still supported (e.g., until 2014 if running
WinXP SP3).

So be thankful you at least have the manually applied Message Rule
functionality to delete older posts. Every 2 or 3 days, I run my Rule to
delete newsgroup posts older than 3 days then I do a manual compact of all
folders. All told, this two-step process might take 2 minutes, Bill, and
I've usually got OE up & running 12-16 hours a day, 24/7. Heck, it takes
longer than that to shave every couple of days! <eg>

I wonder if the cost might be a disincentive, Ken!
https://www.forteinc.com/agent/order-form.php

Maybe, though, there is a 'Free' Agent which I haven't found. Is there?

There was, once. But the "Free" Agent did not have full functionality in the
combined News+Mail department; it was strictly news, and somewhat limited
even then.

As one who prefers tools properly designed for the job, instead of a "Swiss
Army Knife" application, I've long used 40tude Dialog for news, and Pegasus
Mail for email.

Are you implying that you are already using the Maintenance tab option
for automatically deleting news message bodies after a specified number
of days? That at least should help reduce the size of your newsgroup .dbx files.
Then, for an out-of-sight-out-of mind application just use the View:
Show Downloaded Messages (e.g. hide bare headers).

There will not be a reduction in dbx file size until a compaction occurs.

Yeah, I know, and I do something similar. But it just seems like something
that should already be in there, as I am SURE most people aren't even aware
of this, and never do it. As I said, it should have been designed in,
after all these iterations of OE over all the years).

And I have NO interest whatsoever in a heavier applet, like "MS Outlook".
