Hello All,

You will have to excuse me if any of the termonolgy I use is not correct,
I'm a networking newbie...

I am tring to network two machines over the Internet (they are located
10miles apart so a basic LAN is not an option), I can connect using Remote
Desktop Connection, which is fine, but I also need to be able to set up
shared folders and a shared printer. I want to be able to copy files from
one machne to another, something I can't figure out how to do in Remote
Desktop Connection. I also want to be able to send a print job to the remote
printer. Both machines have ADSL internet connections and both have static
IP addresses, routers with firewalls, also both have XP Pro SP2. Do I need
special software to do this? Is what I'm doing considered setting up a WAN?
Any tips/help/general guidance and/or more information would be greatly
received.

Thanks for you help

Matthew

Thanks for this, this will help with the file sharing problems. One of the
things I would really like to be able to do is send a print job to the remote
machine from the local one. I can't figure out how o install a printer on
the local machine that is attached to the remote one over the Internet.

You may want to Google around a bit for something called a VPN, which is
a secure link that gives you a virtual local network with all the
functionality that comes with that (like filesharing and printing).

It can seem a bit daunting to set up sometimes, but there are a lot of
guides out there. Also leaf through the manual of your router, some
support this out of the box. Otherwise you need some free (or not free)
software.
