Disable "Netbios over TCP\IP" allows files to open quickly?

Here goes: I have 3 computers networked. Everything was fine and normal.
Just recently on my machine, I noticed that my .doc files and .xlr files on
my machine in "My Documents" or on my "Desktop" would open slow (15-40 sec.).
After countless research, and trying many things to correct this issue I
noticed that when I go into my internet connection and disable the "Netbios
over TCP\IP" in the WINS tab, everything goes back to normal, but now the
other 2 machines cannot access my files.

I leave my Netbios disabled because I can still share with the other machines.

Strange, that when Netbios is enabled it would appear that it is checking
something over the Network prior to opening the files. Does anyone know why
this is happening or how to correct this?

It is apparent that something has changed on my system, as this does not
happen on the other 2 machines.

Running AVG Free and have the Microsoft Firewall turned on at all machines.
Strange thing is that it only affects opening files on my machine. the other
two are also running AVG Free as well as the Microsoft Firewall turned on. If
I am at there machines I can access there files on there machines with no
problems(i.e.: no delay)

NOTE: XP Pro on 2 machines (mine and one other hard wired cat5 to router)
and 1 machine running XP Home (connected by WIFI to router)

OOPS! Sorry, I thought I was still in the Vista group and see now that
you're running XP.

Hi
If you have mapped drives, try to UnMap them. and ReMap them after boot.
