Netbios over TCP/IP greyed out

Eric Cross [MVP]

Greetings Gerald,

All networking functions are available using TCP/IP as the only network
protocol. If NetBEUI is installed then uninstall it and use the same network
protocol on all machines. Normally, the NetBIOS over TCP/IP option is
checked and greyed out. If there is no checkmark, then click the box to put
a checkmark in the box. For more details, see the following link.

I have 2 XP and one Win98 networked wired. Can ping and browse and
transfer files ok, but transfer to and from Win98 machine very slow. On
the Win98 under TCP/IP the option to enable netbios over TCP/IP is
greyed out.

Setup of XP-1
Client for MS Networks
File & Printer Sharing for MS Networks
QoS Packet Scheduler
Internet Protocol TCP/IP with netbios over TCP/IP enabled.

Setup of XP-2
Same as above plus NWLink TPX/SPX netbios compatible protocol

Setup of Win-98
Client for MS Networks
Microsoft Family Logon
TCP/IP
D-Link PCI adapter
File & Printer Sharing.

Previously I had XP-1 and two Win98 computers networked and they worked
fine using netbeui, but when one Win98 was swapped out for another XP
nothing worked until Netbeui was removed from all.

Why can't I enable Netbios over TCP/IP on the Win98 machine anymore?
Is QoS Packet Scheduler needed on the Win98 machine? If so, how is this
done?

The NetBIOS over TCP/IP option In Windows 98 is normally enabled (with
a check mark in the box) and greyed out. File and printer sharing in
Windows 98 requires NetBIOS, so you can only disable (un-check) it if
you've installed another NetBIOS-capable protocol, such as NetBEUI or
IPX/SPX.

Is IPX/SPX only installed on XP-2? If so, it's doing nothing useful,
and in might be contributing to the networking problems. Remove it.

QoS Packet Scheduler has no role in file and printer sharing and can't
be installed on Windows 98. You can read about it here:
