Newly installed XP Home locks up after 5 minutes online

I had a computer with WindowsME OS that kept locking up after a short time online. I installed XP Home and it kept locking up on me after about 5 minutes online. I had to do a hard boot EVERY time. I figured it was some sort of conflict, so I tried to uninstall ME but it wasn't listed in the Add/Delete programs under Control Panel.

I finally reformatted my hard drive and reinstalled XP and AOL. It STILL locks up after about 5 minutes online. Changing to Windows XP is turning out to be a HUGE mistake. I'm completely frustrated. Can anyone tell me what's going on?
