The former gives you access to local resources while the latter gives you
domain access to network resources. According to your permissions though.

Sounds correct. When you logon locally you haven't authenticated with a DC
hence any network resources would be unavailable.

Looks like Dave misread that you CAN access server resources without
authenicating.
First understanding you need is MS server software does server/client AND
peer to peer. You are connecting peer to peer because you have a server
account that matches the one locally. You are not authenicating to the
domain but your are authenicating at the share level. I would suspect the
share is set to Everyone and not Authenicated Users which is why you can
connect.
