newbie help me please

How do I copy a DVD recorded home movie (that I made from our old video
tape)
to my hard drive so that I can open it in Windows Movie Maker and add some
background music etc.
I can't seem to figure out how to get the files onto my hard drive now.

I have WINXP large hard drive. Computer about 2 yrs old.

Make a folder on your hard drive.
Put the DVD in the drive, select to browse or explorer the
DVD.
Copy it to the folder.
or

Put the DVD in the drive and import it from the DVD into
Movie Maker.
Do your edits and save to the hard drive.

When it is all done, burn another DVD.

To import existing digital media files
1.. On the File menu, click Import into Collections.
-or-

Do one of the following, depending on what type of digital
media file you want to import:

a.. In the Movie Tasks pane, under Capture Video, click
Import video.
b.. In the Movie Tasks pane, under Capture Video, click
Import pictures.
c.. In the Movie Tasks pane, under Capture Video, click
Import audio or music.
2.. In File name, enter the path and file name of the file
you want to import, and then click Import.
3.. If you want selected video files to be separated into
smaller clips, select the Create clips for video files check
box.
Note

a.. You can import several files at one time. For
consecutive files, click the first file in the list, press
and hold down the SHIFT key, and then click the last file in
the list. For files that are not consecutive, press and hold
down the CTRL key, and then click each file that you want to
import.
