New (XP) version of fdisk?

Hi,

I had a multi-boot setup with two instances of Windows XP and one of Windows
2000 Pro. I had been using System Commander 8 by V-Com to handle the
multi-boot.

I intentionally deleted one of my Windows XP partitions without realizing
that was where I had System Commander installed. Now my multi-boot setup is
history and I can't even boot to the Windows XP installation that I didn't
delete. I am hoping that this XP installation might be ok if I could just
make its partition active.

I used to do stuff like this along time ago by booting to a Windows 98
startup disk and running the FDISK utility. I no longer have a Windows 98
startup disk, nor do I have a PC running windows 98 that I can use to create
one.

I was wondering if there is a Windows XP version of FDISK (or something
similar) that I can use. If so, where do I get it and what do I boot from in
order to run it?

Any help will be appreciated.

Thanks in advance,
Paul

2 ways to do this without going to such lengths. One is to restore the
partition with image backup that I know you have. The other, is to use the
boot floppy media you made after you installed SC. Such media contains
partition commander application for doing exactly what you're asking by
fdisk. Believe its on the 2nd floppy. Both floppies are bootable.

There should have been a remnant of SC on the master boot record area. It
should have left selection of booting one of the two remaining partitions by
a selectable partition number. It does not hide any primary partitions in
the selection process. But, will make active the partition you select. Use
of keyboard mandatory by typing in the number followed by the "enter" key.

There is help at

There is an easier way...

Boot to XP installation media, select the recovery option. This will put you
into a command prompt... Then run DiskPart.exe. This will place you at the
Diskpart prompt:

diskpart >Select disk 0 (if this is the actual first disk that the OS is on).
diskpart >Select Partition 1 (assuming that your install of original xp is
on part 1).
diskpart >Active (this sets the partition to active).
diskpart >Exit (to get out of diskpart utility).
C:\>Exit (should reboot PC).

Should be good to go... I think?
