I did an XP PRO upgrade on my computer 1 Yr. ago. I had been hit so hard with
spyware that I decided to do a fresh install.
I re-formatted and did the install, then the registration, when I came to
the desktop, there was nothing there but the recycle bin. I have not
re-installed any applications yet. How do I get the regular desktop icons to
show?

You are seeing the default retail XP desktop, i.e., just the Recycle Bin.

To choose from other common icons, right click on the dektop, select
Properties, choose the Desktop tab, click the Customize Desktop button
and...voila!

By default, that is all XP has. If you want the rest (My Computer, etc) you
need to go into Display Properties, Desktop tab, then Customize Desktop
button. From there, you can add the other icons.

What you're seeing is the way Microsoft "presumed" most people wanted
their desktops to look like when they designed WinXP. Simply
right-click anywhere on the blank desktop, select Properties, and
customize to your heart's content.
