New XP install... Update not working?

Calab

I have just installed Windows XP Pro (SP2) on my computer. All the hardware
drivers are installed and working normally. No other software has been
installed yet. I'm hoping someone can shed some light on this.

I went online and did my Windows updates a few times, installing SP3 and
whatever patches were offerred. I also installed Microsoft Update.

Now for some reason, when I do Windows Update, or try to run the MS Live
Messenger installers, I'm told that the installations have failed.

Right now the following updates are outstanding:
KB928365 - NET security update
.NET 1.1 SP1
KB951213 - Silverlight 1.0 install

The Live Messenger installer puts the following entry in the event viewer,
but I have no idea what it's complaining about:

The description for Event ID ( 5000 ) in Source ( WindowsLiveSetup ) cannot
be found. The local computer may not have the necessary registry information
or message DLL files to display messages from a remote computer. You may be
able to use the /AUXSOURCE= flag to retrieve this description; see Help and
Support for details. The following information is part of the event:
wlsetupdiagnostic, windows live messenger, 8.5.1302.1018, oninstallend_
0x80004002, 12.0.1471.1025, NIL, NIL, NIL, NIL, NIL, NIL.

SP2 & SP3 are fine, however after SP3 windows installer needs to be updated
to v3.1,or installations such as messenger fail.

Updates are not installed successfully from Windows Update, from Microsoft
Update, or by using Automatic Updates after you perform a new Windows XP
installation or you repair a Windows XP installation
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/943144

NB: Ignore the title, if necessary; also applies to Upgrade installs, and
Recovery installs.
