New XP Home install

New Win EP Home install. Display Adapters logo does not appear in Device
Manager. I only have the drivers for the View Sonic CRT. There is no avenue
in display properties to add a new driver either. There are default monitor
settings that loaded with windows, but the drivers are not accessible, the
lettering is greyed out. So we look at a 640 x 400 presentation with big
fonts and washed out color. Any ideas

You are probably missing the drivers for your Display Adapter.
Download Belarc Advisor from the following link and look at what it says
under "Display", "Display Adapter"
http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html
Or, if you know what your motherboard is exactly you could probably find the
driver at their site.
Even Windows/Microsoft Update will offer you something if it detects it,
but that would be the last resort as WU tends to offer rather old drivers
for hardware.

Is this XP Gold (orig), SP1 or SP2? Go to Start/Run and enter "winver"
minus the "". then click Enter.

This is a new out of the Box XP Home. The Computer is a 2 yr old Sony with a
View Sonic VA720 Moniter. Unforrtunately my friend lost all the software. I
wiped the drive, formatted and install the XP Home w/SP2. There are no
moniters in the device mgr. All the adjustments in the properties are
unavaliable. I am trying to get the modem up but I had to download the
drivers for that toooooo. It is aproprietory setup from Sony I guess. Still
stuck. Once I register the System maybe MS tech can give me some ideas too...

Thanks I will try this site. I just can't believe MS would put out such a
poor generic display adapter. I will go to this web site.

Good luck. It's the video card that's the problem I feel. You just need to
find out what it is and then go to the manufacturer's website.

Have you tried booting into BIOS (tap F1 repeatedly while booting up) and
see if graphics are enabled or even seen in there?
Also the video card could be burned out or loose in it's seating.
