New monitor driver?

T

Tom W

I recently had to reinstall Win XP Professional (sp2). Everything went
smoothly except for the monitor. I originally had an old crt type
monitor connected. resolution is 640 X 480. When I connect a flat
panel display, I can't change the resolution.
I opened control panel
double click 'display'
click 'Settings' tab
click 'Advance' button
click the 'monitor' tab
the monitor type is "default" and the 'Properties' button is grayed out.

I have a driver for a flat panel monitor, but how can I install the
driver if the 'properties' button is disabled?

Thanks
Tom

Or maybe a better question is why is the properties button grayed out?

Thanks again
Tom

Have you installed the proper video card drivers? Maybe un uninstall and
reinstall of them would be a good place to start.

Thanks for the quick reply David.

Sorry if I'm sounding stupid, but the only way I know to uninstall or
install a driver is through control panel, display, settings, .... If
the properties button is grayed out/ disabled, how can I install a new
driver?

Why would the properties button be disabled in the first place? I'm
guessing that there is no driver installed. maybe?

Thanks
Tom

How you install / update the vid.driver depends on the vid display that you
have.
What is your graphic card, or is it onboard (ie part of the motherboard)

the graphic 'card' is integrated on the motherboard

Then you obtain the driver from the motherboard site, or PC maker if large
OEM, eg Dell / HP or Laptop

Unless there are specific instructions on their site, you simply download
the update & run it.
Do NOT use winupdate for any drivers

When I downloaded the driver from Dell, the specific instructions said
to open control panel, display, Settings, advanced, Monitor, properties
button, .....

And so, I'm back to asking why is my Properties button disabled?

Is there any other way?

Thanks for the replies DL.

I think your display is perhaps vga default

You can update the driver via
Control Panel>System>Device Manager>Dispaly Adapter
Driver>Update driver.

Have you perhaps reinstalled your o/s

T

Tom W

Yes, I reinstalled XP.

I'll try the method you mentioned last when I get home tonight (problem
PC is at home; I'm suppose to be working)

Thanks for all the effort.

You do not need a monitor driver at this point, you need the graphics
driver, 2 entirely different things.

If your reinstall winxp cd was just that, did you also instsall chipset &
other drivers that were possibly on another cd supplied with your Dell?

Yes, I reinstalled XP.
