If definitions continually repeat, start by trying the resolution
steps in this article:

Didn't work for me. I noticed during the reinstall that there was an
option to repair. That might be a step to try before doing a complete
uninstall.

Repair or update installs are both found via add or remove programs--worth
trying, as is the Windows Installer cleanup utility--if you use this, remove
just "windows defender signatures."

I don't have any inside info on this issue, I'm afraid--no idea what the
variables are.

Reading back over the different replies, perhaps MS can confirm what the
final working goal is with definition update installation ! Are we expected
to forever check updates in defender as is the case now, which may or may not
work, and if not then use whatever work around solves the problem ! Or can we
imagine that at sometime they will fonction as other windows updates where a
simple click on the alert shield to download and then install will be
sufficient ? Whilst I try to be patient I cannot see the point in
distributing updates without any sign of having solved the first basic
requirement ! that is they install correctly !!

The product is working correctly when check for updates and the automatic
update agent both are used to install updates. This could be considered a
goal, but before the AU Agent works, pre-requisite files must be installed
and that is one of the common issues we are seeing in the newsgroup.
