Hey Engel, What's up with that ? My post is a copy and paste from WU, so
maybe one of the sizes is a typo. It's been awhile. Ron

Hello ×מיר,

Here are answers to some common questions about System Restore.

Applies to all editions of Windows Vista.

How often are restore points created?
Restore points are created automatically every day, and just before
significant system events, such as the installation of a program or device
driver.

How does System Restore work?
System Restore uses restore points to return your system files and settings
to an earlier point in time, without affecting personal files. For more
information, see What is System Restore?

Hi Ǝиçεl
thanks for the links.
My specific question is why restore points upon defender update (last two)
were created ?
as tim wrote
"Size is only 375kb, and it will not trigger a system restore point" .
(Before installing the last WU engine -it did not happen )

×מיר,

When you use WindowsUpdate, that is you go to the Site and have it check for
what you might need, and accept what it offers, IT creates a System Restore
Point. (simple version The Update Site commands your machine to make a
STP)

It does not matter that you were only updating the defs of Defender, Windows
Update does this for any update you get. That is one of the reasons I
provide the link to the direct download of the updates, it by passes the use
of the Windows Update site completely.

Windows Update was designed for "big, important updates !!!" that could
really effect your system in dramatic ways, so creating a restore point is a
good thing. Its just rather silly that it does it if you just update for
defs, but that's the way it works.

So again, it is not the update itself that is causing the SRP, it is the use
of WU to get the update.

Hope that makes things a little clearer

Tim

thanks for your detailed answer Tim
1-as far as i remember it wasn't the situation until i updated WU engiene
few days ago- am i wrong?
2-it's ruther funny (to me) that small ~400k update will triger System
Restore Point.
3-in my other pc (xp pro) there is no System Restore Point trigering after
any update...
4-next defender update i'll try your link to the direct download of the
updates, and report later on.
And YES things are little clearer :)
THANKS

I don't think so
2-it's ruther funny (to me) that small ~400k update will triger System
Restore Point.

You have to remember that Windows Update has been around a lot longer than
Defender. It was not designed to update a relatively small database twice a
week. It was intended to provide Fixes and Patches, to repair and defend
against vulnerabilities that were discovered. WU is not a fun place, no one
goes there unless something is wrong and has to be fixed.

Think of Windows Update as a hospital that was designed only to do major
surgery. As soon as you agree to the surgery they make you an appointment
with the anesthesiologist. The problem is you are there to have a splinter
removed and don't really need an anesthesia. Doesn't matter, that's how they
are set up. You get a Patch, You get a SRP, unless you disable System
Restore.
3-in my other pc (xp pro) there is no System Restore Point trigering after
any update...

Do you have any System Restore Points at all?
Do you have System Restore disabled on that machine?

4-next defender update i'll try your link to the direct download of the
updates, and report later on.

"Probably" will have the link up around around 12:00pm Thursday, "God
willing and the creek don't rise"

Tim,
thanks again! your answers make everything clear.
