New video card and WinXP won't boot.

One of my customers has a PC that the video card died on. I purchased a new
one and replaced it. Now Win XP will not boot. It gets to the selection
screen for safe mode etc., but irregardless of what you choose, the system
stops responding. Thus far I have:
1. Put other video cards in to try to resolve the issue.
2. Pulled the battery from the mother board to drop the on board ROM so that
I'd get system defaults.
3. Cleared the CMOS for the same reason.

Nothing has helped thus far. What am I missing, and what can I do?

dead socket on the MoBo for the video card. Try another, or replace the MoBo

I tried that too, I forgot to add it to the list. I've tried both AGP and
PCI vid cards. With the PCI, I've tried more than one slot. The video does
come up in DOS, it's only when it hits the OS that it fails.
