I thought Xnews was abandoned, nice to know someone's on it, though as a
bit of a wuss I caan't find anything wrong with it that a brain transplant
(mine) won't fix

It is a truly minor upgrade from the previous version released over a
year ago. In fact, in the changes text he tells you how to make the
change in the ini file that is apparently the only upgrade:
-------------------
add this to
Xnews.ini under [Misc]

IgnoreYEncCRCError=1
------------------
No need to download and reinstall XNews, just add this one line to the
ini file, apparently. (Assuming you are using the previous build
released in 2003: 6.08.25)
